Zen Image Optimizer

Frequently asked questions

What the app does to your images, what it costs you, and what it can undo.

Will optimizing change my image URLs?

No. The app replaces an image's bytes in place through Shopify's Files API, so the media ID and the CDN URL stay the same. Your theme, your links, hotlinks from elsewhere and anything Google has already indexed keep working, and nothing needs to be re-indexed.

Which images does it work on?

Product images and images in your Files library, in JPEG, PNG and WebP.

Not covered: animated GIF and animated WebP (re-encoding them frame by frame is a different job, and flattening them would destroy the content), SVG, and collection images — a collection image is a plain image field with no media ID behind it, so there is nothing to rewrite in place.

Does it convert my images to WebP?

No. The output format is always the same as the input format. Replacing an image's bytes in place is what keeps the URL alive, and Shopify requires the replacement to keep the original file extension — so a JPEG stays a JPEG. A WebP you already have is compressed as WebP. Converting formats would mean uploading a new file and deleting the old one, which changes the URL; that is exactly what this app is built to avoid.

Can I undo it?

Yes, for 30 days. Every original is copied before it is replaced, and the copy is checksum-verified when it is read back. Restore a single image from the Backups page, or roll back a whole run from its detail page. After 30 days the stored originals are deleted and a run can no longer be undone — Shopify holds no copy of the pre-optimization file either, so download anything you want to keep before then.

What counts against my monthly quota?

Only images that were actually made smaller. An image that would not shrink by at least 2% is left untouched, reported as skipped, and not counted — as are animated images, formats the app cannot improve, and anything it fails to decode. Restoring an image within the same billing cycle credits the optimization back.

How many images can I optimize per month?

Without a paid plan: 50 optimizations per billing cycle. Paid plans include 1,500 (Starter), 5,000 (Advanced) or 15,000 (Pro) per cycle.

There is no overage billing. When the allowance is spent the run pauses and the app stops optimizing — it cannot charge you for anything beyond the plan you picked.

A run stopped part way through

A run pauses when the plan's included optimizations for the cycle run out. The images it had not reached go back to the “Not optimized” list, so nothing is lost. Change plan, or wait for the cycle to roll over, then open the run and press Resume run.

Will my photos look worse?

That is what the preview is for: it compresses five of your own images in memory and shows you the result before anything is written. Nothing is uploaded during a preview and no quota is used.

Three presets are available — Lossless (visually identical, smallest saving), Balanced (the default) and Aggressive. The colour profile is preserved and normalised to sRGB; EXIF and XMP metadata, which can carry camera serial numbers and GPS coordinates, are stripped.

Does it resize images?

Only if you turn it on. Resizing is off by default. When enabled it caps the longest edge at the size you set (2048 px by default) and only ever shrinks — an image already smaller than the cap is left at its own size and never scaled up.

Can it optimize new images automatically?

Yes. Turn on Automatic mode in Settings and the app optimizes images as they arrive on new and updated products. It ignores its own writes, so it never loops on the images it just compressed, and it obeys the same allowance and the same skip rules as a manual run.

What if I run it twice on the same images?

Nothing happens twice. The app fingerprints its own output, so an image it has already optimized at the current settings is recognised and skipped rather than re-compressed — and a skipped image costs nothing.

Changing or cancelling a plan

Plans are handled by Shopify, not by us. Use Manage plan in the app, which opens the Shopify pricing page for this app in your admin; changes take effect the next time you open the app. Cancelling the app subscription or uninstalling stops any further charges — we cannot and do not charge you anywhere outside Shopify billing.

What data does the app hold?

No customer, order or payment data. The app requests three permissions — read products, read files, write files — and stores image metadata, run history and the backup copies of your originals. See the privacy policy for exactly what is kept and when it is deleted.

What happens if I uninstall?

Optimized images stay optimized — they are ordinary files in your store and do not depend on the app. Uninstalling stops any queued work immediately. Your backups are kept for the 48-hour window Shopify allows before it asks the app to erase the shop's data, so reinstalling by mistake does not cost you your restore window; after that request arrives, everything belonging to your store is deleted, backup files included.

Are there size limits?

Files above 25 MB and images above 40 megapixels are skipped rather than processed, so a single very large file cannot stall a run. They are reported as skipped on the run page and are not counted against your allowance.
